When should you avoid JPEG?

Avoid JPEG for logos, icons, screenshots with text, flat graphics or images that need transparency. Its lossy compression can create artifacts around sharp edges. Compare PNG or lossless WebP for those jobs.

Tune the image, not a remembered number

JPEG quality scales belong to encoders; a value of 80 in one tool is not guaranteed to match 80 in another. Start conservatively, inspect the result at its intended display size and reduce quality in controlled steps. Resize oversized dimensions before fine-tuning compression, and avoid repeatedly recompressing an already lossy JPEG.
